August 2007 - Procurement Assurance Review Client Feedback

Symbia undertook a procurement assurance review for a major government department. The scope of work was to review the procurement aspects of a large piece of work that had been ‘fast-tracked’ through to contract award. The department sought assurance about whether the process was appropriate and suitable at all stages, and if any risk was apparent.

Symbia provided a clear, objective and impartial report to the department, confirming the status of each of the issues highlighted to be checked, the compatibility of each stage in relation to the EU Regulations, and actions that could be taken to lessen the chance of these concerns appearing again.

The client from the government department stated "The [Symbia] consultant's quality and knowledge of commercial and procurement best practice is evidenced by the high quality of the report, speed of understanding the programme and ability to deliver in a short timescale at a very reasonable rate. I would definitely look forward to working with Symbia again”

July 2007 - Symbia plays key part in Through Life Capability Management Conference

At a conference in London on 28th & 29th June, Symbia presented what is recognised as the ‘best of breed’ implementation of Through Life Management Planning (TLMP) in the UK Ministry of Defence.  The Symbia presentation followed the key note speech from Air-Vice Marshal David Rennison, until recently D Log Strike.  The presentation backed up the AVM’s view that good information tools are essential for success in the move towards capability management. The event was attended by over 90 delegates and Symbia’s presentation attracted a great deal of attention, keeping the Symbia team busy discussing key issues on implementing eTLM and how the application can be adapted to support Capability Management. The presentation included case study examples that demonstrated the tangible benefits that Integrated Project teams (IPTs) have gained from eTLM.

May 2007 - Symbia speaking on Procurement Cards at the North West Centre of Excellence 'Bargain Hunt II'

Symbia recently delivered a workshop on the delivery of benefits from purchasing card programmes in conjunction with the Office of Government Commerce for the North West Centre of Excellence. The workshop was one of the key sessions, run as part of the North West Centre of Excellence’s successful Bargain Hunt II event attended by about 200 delegates at the Manchester Central Convention Centre. Symbia’s consultants discussed key issues relating to driving benefits from purchasing card programmes, providing case study examples from our work for various public sector customers like the OGC and Preston City Council. The Symbia presentation from this event can be viewed via http://www.nwce.gov.uk/docstore/session_15.ppt

This workshop follows on from another one delivered for the West Midlands Centre of Excellence at the beginning of May on a similar topic. Symbia’s e-TLM solution approved for wider application

Following joint development with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), Symbia has recently been granted a licence by the MoD to exploit this unique software solution more widely.

The principles of Through Life Management (TLM) are being adopted by the MoD to ensure that everyone involved in complex programmes to deliver military capability is working to the same agenda over the whole life of the programme – often in excess of 25 years.

Symbia’s eTLM solution enables integrated project teams (IPTs), suppliers and customers to gather strategy, plans, resources and finance into a single and accessible application – enabling tighter financial management and the identification of savings and trade-offs across programmes and over long time periods.

The application is now available for use by other organisations with large complex programmes being delivered by partners over an extended period of time.

Symbia leads strategic repositioning of Driving Standards Agency (DSA)

Best known for their provision of driving tests, DSA have concentrated in recent years on improved operations and reducing driving test waiting times.  Under a new Chief Executive, the agency were ready to take on the next challenge and fulfil their broader mission to become a more influential leader in the development of driving standards. Fulfilling this mission required a refocused and restructured organisation with the roles and resources to work more proactively with a wide range of stakeholders in both the Private and Public sector.

Following a thorough review of the DSA organisation, Symbia made a wide range of recommendations to:

  • -          Streamline the Directorate Structure
  • -          Improve customer contact management
  • -          Strengthen Strategic Development activity
  • -          make management and development of the Driving Examiner workforce more effective
  • -          Improve relations with the Driver Training industry.

To make this wide range of changes happen, DSA partnered with Symbia to create a business transformation team, with the resources and specialist expertise needed. We are proud to record the successful accomplishment of our roles, with the majority of the recommendations now implemented and the benefits starting to be realised. Through selective recruitment and skills transfer to internal staff, DSA are now on-track to continue their journey to re-position the Agency over the coming years.
